Preparing the Package

In preparing a package, it should be remembered that time is money; while practically anything can be sent overnight from one coast to the other, there is a surcharge for this feature. It is easier and cheaper to send the package by ground about a week before it needs to arrive. During December, when many people are trying to have their packages arrive by Christmas, it may be necessary to allow at least two weeks.

Use New Packaging Materials When Possible

While it is possible to ship an item in a used container, one must be very careful when recycling packaging. Old boxes retrieved from the dumpster may have weak spots or tears. We have inexpensive boxes of the appropriate shape and strength. These new boxes made for shipping would be your best option.

Additionally, the used box may have an old label; this must be removed completely so that there is no confusion about the package's true destination. A new label can then be affixed. A piece of paper containing sender's and recipient's address information should be placed inside the box.

Fragile items should be packed so the individual items do not touch one another. Bubble wrap, which may be purchased at our store, can be used to wrap each piece. The box can then be filled with polystyrene “peanuts,” corrugated cardboard dividers or plastic foam, also available in our store along with special wrapping paper. Crumpled newspaper and used plastic grocery bags may not provide adequate protection. Ideally, each piece within the box must be two inches from each other piece.

Secure the Outside Properly

The outside of the box should be secured with appropriate wrapping tape made for shipping, several different kinds are available in our store. Thin cellophane tape, masking tape, and holiday wrapping paper should not be used on the outside of the box. One should also avoid wrapping the outside of the box with string, since there is a possibility that this can get caught in the shipper's sorting equipment.
